REALTOR® Code of Ethics & Consumer Resources

REALTOR® Code of Ethics

Understanding the professional standards and responsibilities that guide REALTORS®.

What Does the Code of Ethics Mean for You?

The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Code of Ethics establishes professional standards and responsibilities for individuals who choose to become REALTORS®.

The Code goes beyond basic legal requirements and sets expectations for honesty, integrity, professionalism, and the protection of consumers throughout real estate transactions.

Whether you are buying or selling a home, understanding these standards can help you know what to expect from your real estate professional.

For Consumers: What Can You Expect From a REALTOR®?

How Does the Code of Ethics Affect Everyday Real Estate Practices?

If a REALTOR® represents you, whether you are buying or selling a home, you can expect that professional to follow the ethical standards established by NAR. These standards include:

1 Be Honest With All Parties in the Transaction

REALTORS® are expected to be honest and truthful with everyone involved in a transaction, not just their own clients, but also other real estate professionals and their clients.

For example, if a REALTOR® represents a buyer with a spotty credit history, the REALTOR® cannot misrepresent that information to the seller. However, the REALTOR® can help the buyer assemble supporting information, such as credit reports and tax returns, to demonstrate that the buyer has addressed the issue and improved their financial situation.

2 Put Your Interests Ahead of Their Own

REALTORS® are expected to put their clients' interests ahead of their own while providing professional services.

A REALTOR® makes every effort to understand a client's housing needs, thoroughly research available inventory, and share relevant information so the client can make an informed decision. This service should not be influenced by the compensation available to the REALTOR®.

3 Disclose Pertinent Facts About the Property and Transaction

REALTORS® have responsibilities regarding the disclosure of known material facts and information affecting a transaction.

If a REALTOR® believes information provided by a seller is questionable, the REALTOR® should investigate. REALTORS® should also recommend that buyers consult qualified experts, such as home inspectors, when appropriate.

For example, if a seller asks a REALTOR® to conceal a known roof leak, the REALTOR® cannot comply. If the seller insists on concealment, the REALTOR® may need to end the business relationship.

4 Be Truthful in All Communications With the Public

REALTORS® must be honest and accurate in their advertising, websites, marketing materials, and other communications with the public.

For example, when advertising recently sold or listed properties, REALTORS® should clearly identify whether they personally participated in the transaction or whether the information came from the local multiple listing service or another source.

This helps consumers understand a REALTOR®'s experience and make informed decisions when selecting real estate representation.
